The Church

Historically, the site of the present rural chapel played an important part in the formation of Primitive Methodism. Evangelised in 1810 by Mary Dunnell, who stayed at Heathy Close, it was the first Primitive Methodist Chapel (built in 1811) in Derbyshire. Hugh Bourne and William Clowes, the two founders of the Movement, regularly visited this chapel in the first half of the 19th century. Boylestone also had the first Primitive Methodist Sunday School. Today, Boylestone Methodist Church has modern facilities including a school room.

The congregation is widely known for the warmth of its welcome and its friendliness. A number of members are involved in the village activities in both Cubley and Boylestone, and are active in raising money for areas of concern worldwide, for instance, supporting work in Belarus.
